Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens also known as Queen Latifah, an American artist and rapper. The work of Queen Latifah in film, television and in music has earned her several awards. This includes a Golden Globe Award two Screen Actors Guild Awards Two Image Awards A Grammy Award Six additional Grammy nominations, an Emmy Award Nomination and an Academy Award. Queen Latifah, the daughter of a Newark New Jersey schoolteacher and an Newark New Jersey police officer Lancelot Owens Senior was raised and born within Newark New Jersey. The couple divorced when Latifah was 10 years old. Latifah attended a Catholic school and was educated at Newark New Jersey. She was a member of the Baptist church. Latifah is a word that means gentle and generous. Her cousin gave it to her when she was eight years old. Always a tall girl the 5'10 tall Latifah was a forward for her high school basketball team. She performed the number"Home" from the show The Wiz in a high school production. Latifah was a member of the Ladies Fresh, a rap group that launched her career in beatboxing. Latifah joined in the Flavor Unit in its original model, consisting of an MC team led by producer DJ Mark The 45 King. Mark James aka the DJ Mark the 40 King, created an audition for the rap Princess of the Posse by Queen Latifah. The song was recorded and given to Yo! MTV Raps who is known as Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music was enthralled by the tune. It was signed by Latifah, and released her first track Wrath of My Madness in 1988.
